Women Win Midterms: A Spotlight on Some of the Women Who Won the Midterm Elections

The 2018 Midterm elections are over and women have many reasons to celebrate! There were a lot of firsts for women in this midterm election including 112 women getting seats in the congress. That is the most women to ever serve in congress at once!

Below is a list of some of these phenomenal female power houses.

Ayanna Presley (Dem)

State: Massachusetts

Winner: U.S. House of Representatives for 7th district of MA
Accomplishment: First black congresswoman for the state of Massachusetts!

 

 


Jahana Hayes (Dem)


State: Connecticut

Winner: U.S. House of Representatives for 5th district of CT
Accomplishment: First black woman elected to Congress In Connecticut!

 


Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (Dem)

State: New York 

Winner: U.S. House of Representatives for 14th district of NY
Accomplishment: This 28 year old latina is the youngest woman ever voted into congress.

 



Rashida Tlaib (Dem)

State: Michigan
Winner: U.S. House of Representatives for 13th district of MI
Accomplishment: The 42 year old former state lawmaker is one of the first muslim women voted into congress!

 

 

 

Ilhan Omar (Dem)
State: Minnesota
Winner: U.S. House of Representatives for 5th district of MN

Accomplishment: Ilhan will be the first black woman representative for Minnesota and she’ll do it all while wearing her hijab (the first in congress to do so)! Omar is also the first Somali-American in congress.

 

 

Michelle Lujan Grisham (Dem)

 

 

State: New Mexico
Winner: Governor-elect of NM
Accomplishment: First latina woman governor for the state of New Mexico and in the US.

 

 

Debra A. Haaland (Dem)

 

State: New Mexico
Winner: U.S. House of Representatives for 1st district of NM
Accomplishment: First Native American woman elected to Congress

 

 

Lucy McBath (Dem)

 

State: Georgia
Winner: U.S. House of Representatives for 6th district of GA
Accomplishment: The mother of Jordan Davis, who fell victim to gun violence in 2012 wins the district as a gun control advocate.



Special Mention: Stacey Abrams who has not conceded her race to become the first African-American female governor of Georgia.

Despite heavy accusation of voter suppression from her Republican candidate *side eye* Abrams insists on waiting until every vote is counted before she relinquishes. This may mean that a clear winner isn’t called until next Tuesday November 12th.
