With the seasons changing, let’s go over the fashion trends that kept us warm and fashionable all winter long. From the runway to the streets, these trends can be worn in everyday life.
Balaclava
The balaclava is one of fashion’s most popular trends this winter. The trendy headgear garment has been around for years and has served both functional and religious purposes. A balaclava is a headgear garment designed to expose only part of the face, usually the eyes and mouth. The headgear offers versatility to the wearer as it can be made from different fabrics such as wool for winter days to a cool sheer for the springtime. While balaclavas are functional by providing warmth, they are also used as a modesty alternative for Muslim women.

Moon boots are back and are taking over. Originally created in the 1970s, moon boots became popular after the Apollo 11 moon landing. Moon boots became a staple of the early Y2K fashion trend and could be seen worn by celebrities like Mariah Carey and Paris Hilton. With the resurgence of Y2K fashion, it’s no wonder why moon boots have returned to mainstream fashion.
Fuzzy Hats
Bucket hats have been a staple of fashion since the 90s when furry Kangols dominated the streets. With the revival of Y2K at its height right now, it’s no surprise that fuzzy hats are everywhere. Rihanna has been seen on numerous occasions rocking the colorful style hat. Rihanna has even influenced the likes of her boyfriend, A$AP Rocky, who was spotted wearing a colorful fuzzy hat while filming a music video alongside the business mogul. Fuzzy hats are the perfect pairing to any winter outfit to give a pop of color.
Opera Gloves
Gloves have always been a staple for keeping warm in the wintertime but now have gotten a revamped twist. Opera gloves have been around for years but have recently been risen to popularity on TikTok. Opera gloves nowadays can be seen rocked with a feather boa rim or in different fabrics like leather and mesh. Celebrities such as Rihanna, Tessa Thompson, and Lizzo have been seen wearing the trendy style on the runway.
Leather Jackets
Instead of a big black puffer, a black leather jacket is the new IT coat for winter. As seen on Zoë Kravtiz in the television show High Fidelity, leather jackets are a staple wardrobe piece. Whether you choose to rock a mini leather jacket or choose to embrace the full trench coat look, black leather jackets are a trend not going away anytime soon.
Dystopian/ Apocalyptic
With Tik Tok and social media in general opening up conversations for new trends, dystopian fashion has made its way to popularity. When earlier forms of dystopian fashion first arrived, we mainly saw it on people like Kanye West during the Yeezus Era back in 2013. However, in terms of runway fashion, we saw it from designers such as Karl Lagerfeld and more recently, Demna and his Balenciaga designs.
When most people envision this trend, it usually consists of distressed clothes. However, it is more than just that. The dystopian trend includes heavily layered clothes, leather trench coats, an oversized fit, and more recently ski masks have entered the arena. Another piece people have seemed to come back to are leg warmers. Luckily, this time around it’s not the ones rocked in the 80s. Mostly this accessory is paired with boots or a skirt/tights look.
As time continues on, this genre of clothing evolves. It becomes a bit edgier and allows people to really experiment, whether that be cutting slits in tights or putting on two to three shirts at a time to create a super structured top. The Dystopian trend is one that a lot of people seem to be hopping on lately simply based on the fact that it allows people to explore their creativity.
Chunky Colorful Knits
Who doesn’t love a comfortable oversized sweater? Well if you weren’t a fan before because you thought they looked too frumpy, you should check them out now! The chunky knits have come back but more chunky and more colorful. Brands like Hope Macaulay use the knits for more than just sweaters but for bucket hats, sets, and dresses. Her creative twist has inspired many other brands to follow suit and take their own spin on it
Edgy Y2K
Maybe it has something to do with Dystopian fashion taking the spotlight, but Y2K fashion is indefinitely still around. However, not in the same form. Instead of the bright colors and velvet tracksuits, a lot of Ed Hardy seems to be hitting the streets again. It’s giving very much punk rock y2k emo vibes, but not as ‘rawr xD’ as you think. Like most trends that have resurfaced, the trend has evolved. Think edgy punk rock mixed with some sex appeal.
Between the supermini latex skirts and dresses with lots of slit detailing, a lot of people have been finding ways to incorporate this look into their winter wardrobe. If you’re wondering how the answer is simple. Most of these looks are usually paired with patterned tights or high knee boots to keep your legs warm. Brands like Naked Wolfe and Steve Madden have made a huge success off of this trend with their knee-high tight boots. All in all, these clothes can be worn day to day but are more ideal for nightlife.
Mesh Clothing
Speaking of Y2K, mesh tops made a huge comeback. Demand is so high for them right now due to the fact that there are so many different iterations of not only mesh tops but mesh clothing in general. Sometimes it makes for the perfect layered fit, while at other times it adds a peek of skin to the outfit. It seems that the biggest appeal of this trend is not just the fact that it is simple mesh, but graphic mesh clothing. The reason why it works so well for winter is you could easily layer the mesh top with a turtleneck, tank top, or whatever shirt you think fits. The more layers the warmer you are!
Vintage Designer
Designer brands have always been popular but there was a point where they fell off among the younger crowd. As of lately, there has been a major resurgence between the vintage Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, Chanel, and many more. Even though thrifting has always been around, more people have been gravitating towards consignment and vintage shops in order to find one-of-a-kind pieces. For the winter weather, you may have seen people in leather Helmut Lang pants or steel Rick Owens Boots.
