According to a source close to Travis Scott’s negotiation for the Super Bowl they have confirmed that Scott insisted that the league make a joint donation to an organization fighting for social justice in order for him to move forward with the event.
Travis Scott has signed on to perform during the halftime show for SuperBowl LIII-but only after the NFL agreed to join him in donating to a cause for social justice, Billboard states.
Travis Scott and the NFL has agreed to jointly donate 500,000 to Dream Corps, among other endeavors that Scott and the NFL will collaborate on. The nonprofit, Dream Corps, is a “social justice accelerator,” which backs “initiatives that close prison doors and open doors of opportunity for all” according to the website.
When the news first broke that Travis Scott would be performing for the halftime show- alongside Maroon 5 and Big Boi- he was met with some backlash. This is due to the NFL’s mistreatment of quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick and their negative stance on kneeling during the national anthem. Many celebrities such as Micheal B. Jordan and Rev. Al Sharpton voiced their disapproval of rapper, Travis Scott doing the halftime show.
It’s rumored that several artists such as Cardi B, Rihanna, and Jay- Z turned down the halftime show to demonstrate support of Kaepernick and the Black Lives Matter Movement.
The Superbowl LIII is scheduled to air on February 3 at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
