In every album she has released, Beyonce has reinvented herself experimenting with different sounds and visuals, and 4 is no different. 4 is the R&B Diva’s diva’s 4th studio album and is heavily influenced by 70s and 90s Rock n Roll. Beyonce cited the album as her boldest work at the time.
On her website, the singer wrote “the album is definitely an evolution. It’s bolder than the music on my previous albums because I’m bolder. The more mature I become and the more life experiences I have, the more I have to talk about. I really focused on songs being classics, songs that would last, songs that I could sing when I’m 40 and when I’m 60.”
The album spawned 5 international hits such as “Party,” “Countdown,” “Girls (Who Run the World),” “Best Thing I Never Had” and “Love on Top.”
4 was recorded 3 months into the singer’s hiatus in 2010 and was influenced by Nigerian Afrobeat musician, Fela Kuti. Beyonce also credits Earth, Wind & Fire, The Stylistics, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson as additional influences.
4 is Beyonce’s most underrated album with hits like the Andre 3000 assisted single “Party” and ” and the sultry “Dance for you,” the singer brings back 90s soul mixed with 80s pop and 70s funk.
The grittiness and raw emotion in Beyonce’s voice combined with the use of percussion and horns created a new and nostalgic sound. It is safe to say that 4 will stand the test of time.
