MEF Picks: The Top 10 Movies of 2018

2018 was definitely one of the best years for movies. From a cinematic toss up of Romantic Comedies like Crazy Rich Asians to Thrillers such as Searching, this year featured a lot of diversity. Here’s MEFeater’s top 10 movies of 2018.

10. Venom

Although it was not well- received by critics, Venom was a box office success. The Marvel film follows journalist Eddie Brock who gains superpowers after being bound to an alien symbiote whose species plan to invade Earth. The Ruben Fleishcer directed movie went on to become the fifth- highest grossing film of 2018, and is the perfect anti-hero movie.

9. A Star is Born

A Star is Born is definitely one of the most beautiful films of 2018. The musical romantic drama is based on the 1937 film of the same name. Bradley Cooper makes his directorial debut alongside Lady Gaga in her first significant acting role. The film follows the pairs tragic love story in one of the most captivating performances of the year. The film’s soundtrack is also equally amazing.

8. BlacKkKlansman

The Spike Lee directed film follows the story of Ron Stalworth, the first black detective hired at a Colorado Springs precinct in the early 1970s. The cop infiltrates the local Klu Klux Klan by phone and tries to gather intel on the organization. The film received praise from critics, and the American Film Institute named it one of the best films of the year.

7. Ocean’s 8

Ocean’s 8 is the latest in the franchise and this time features an all-female cast full of badasses. The movie follows Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) and her team as they plan an elaborate heist at the Met Gala. The film is full of surprises and stars Rihanna. What more do you need?

6. Crazy Rich Asians

This list would not be complete without Crazy Rich Asians. The film was a box office and critical success and completely stole our hearts. The film was praised for its all Asian cast including the swoon worthy Henry Golding as Nick Young. This adaption of Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same name is filled with enough opulence and grandeur to make anyone’s head spin.

5. Black Panther

This comes as no surprise as Black Panther completely shattered numerous box office records. The Ryan Coogler directed film transports viewers into the high-tech world of Wakanda. The star studded cast is just one of the things we love about this movie. Lupita Nyong’o, Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, and Angela Bassett deliver stellar performances.

4. Avenger’s Infinity War

The Marvel Universe was consistent in putting out box office hits this year, and Infinity War, which is the latest in the Avenger’s series was no different. Infinity War was unbelievably action packed and full of heartbreak. The film also saw the loss of some of everyone’s favorite heroes including the introduction of super villain Thanos.

3. Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody was without a doubt one of the best films of the year. The movie, which came out in early November has already became the highest grossing biopic in history. The film follows British Rock band Queen and the life of their lead singer Freddie Mercury leading up to their iconic 1985 Live Aid performance. Rami Malek’s portrayal of Freddie Mercury was spot on and is worth seeing.

2. The Hate You Give

The Hate You Give definitely deserves to be on this list. It was one of the most powerful films of 2018, and displayed a strong message regarding police brutality and racism. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Jackson, MS author Angie Thomas.

1. Searching

Searching is 2018’s most intense thriller. The film takes place entirely on the computer monitor of a middle aged father. The father is played by John Cho. This innovative cyber-thriller has so many twists and turns, and shows viewers how to solve a crime by using google.
