The Rise and Fall of Famed Lingerie Brand, Victoria’s Secret

Ready for a great weekend binge? A documentary titled Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons will delve deep into how Victoria’s Secret became one of the biggest brands in the world, worth $7.5 billion before ultimately suffering from its demise in 2018. Today, the former lingerie brand is working on revamping its company to become more inclusive after receiving numerous complaints for lack of diversity.

From 1995 to 2019, Victoria’s Secret hosted its annual fashion show that combined pop culture and fashion in cities like LA, Paris, London, and Shangai. With each show getting bigger and bigger, the musical acts lived up to the same caliber with performances from Rihanna, Bruno Mars, and The Weeknd. Some of the world’s biggest supermodels have walked in the once infamous show such as Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, Adriana Lima, and Heidi Klum.

In later years, the brand came under fire for its lack of representation and negative stances on inclusivity and body positivity. Things got even worse for the company in 2018 when CMO, Ed Razek told Vogue he had no interest in featuring plus-sized models on the Victoria’s Secret runway. In a different interview, he stated that “transsexual models” would not walk the Victoria’s Secret runway as it was a “fantasy”.

Since the demise of Victoria’s Secret, Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty lingerie brand has stepped in to fill the void. The brand has been praised for using diverse models in their campaigns and runway shows and for showing more inclusivity in the sizes that they carry. The Savage x Fenty show has aired for the last 3 years on Amazon Prime Video showcasing Rihanna’s latest collections, numerous musical acts, and creative runways. It is safe to safe Savage x Fenty is now at the forefront of the lingerie industry.

The official synopsis of the documentary is: “Investigated with journalistic rigor by director Matt Tyrnauer, this documentary tells the searing and provocative story of the Victoria’s Secret brand and its longtime CEO, the larger-than-life, enigmatic billionaire, Les Wexner.
