The Influence of Streetwear on Luxury Fashion

As many may or may not know, Supreme recently collaborated with luxury brand Tiffany & Co. Although this collaboration may seem mismatched, it’s actually not as far-fetched as we think.

In the past, we’ve seen Supreme partner with other large brands like Nike, Fila, and A Bathing Ape. Mainly pairing with athletic wear and streetwear brands as they are all within the same realm of fashion. However, in more recent years, Supreme has seemingly changed things up a bit, switching from streetwear brands to luxury fashion groups, including Comme Des Garçons, Louis Vuitton, Aquascutum, and most recently, Missoni.

Could this be as a result of wanting to try something new? Or is Supreme realizing that in order to thrive in the world of fashion, you have to reach more than just one audience?

How Streetwear Continues to Expand

Supreme has never been a brand to mimic its competitors, and as an OG of streetwear brands, it’s been pretty cool to watch this brand successfully collaborate with others and experiment with different designs. Supreme’s new collaborations represent something much bigger than joining luxury brands. This move truly reflects what is going on in the world of fashion right now; that is evolution.

The idea of mixing streetwear with high-end fashion only came about with the emergence of new-age designers.  And there’s one thing for sure, these new-age designers refuse to have their designs put into a bubble or just one genre. A great example of this is Balenciaga and Gucci’s hacker project, or seeing brands like VLONE featured at Paris Fashion Week. The world of fashion seems to be expanding in a sense where it’s become a novelty to be able to wear everyday clothes as high fashion.

So what does this mean for streetwear?

The Results

Streetwear is always going to be here. Even when combined with luxury brands, the category will remain unchanged, never to be oversaturated; as long as designers and creative teams continue to stay true to their roots. If anything, this proves that streetwear brands hold a special place in the world of fashion and will play a part in maintaining the relevance of luxury brands.
