The Candydrip Tour has come to a close, but if you snagged tickets, you saw Lucky Daye put on quite a show. This tour marks the R&B star’s first headlining tour since 2019, when he hit the road for his debut album, Painted. The Candydrip Tour, named after his latest album Candydrip, started in Portland, Oregon on March 18th. With fellow R&B singer, Joyce Wrice as the opener, the tour played nationwide, ending this last week in New York City’s Terminal 5.
Success On and Off Tour
It was a busy tour for Lucky Daye. He won his first Grammy, Best Progressive R&B Album for Table For Two. His single “Over” blew up on TikTok and secured his first placement on Billboard’s Hot 100 list. He released two visuals for the recent album, the latest “NWA”, was four minutes and twenty seconds of Candydrip reimagined as a digital magazine, dropped on 4/20. Daye’s success is not only recognized outside tour but onstage as well. If you are a Daye One and didn’t catch the show live, you probably saw clips of the show online. As he solidifies his stardom, this tour may have solidified his heartthrob status.
We Came For A Show!
Like most concerts of the new millennium, as the stage lights turn on, so do the cameras in the crowd. Daye’s showgoers FaceTimed friends from the audience and provided the internet with an inside look at the show. To compliment his music, known for its detailed instrumentation, he brought along his band, The CandyDrip Clergy. Together they delivered live renditions of Lucky Daye’s songs to a crowd reciting lyrics word-for-word back to him. In true male R&B fashion, he starts each show dripping in everything from silk shirts, to leather pants, and monochrome suits. All to end the show shirtless, and the girls were not mad at it. They also were not upset when he chose a girl from the crowd to come onstage.
Bring Us Onstage!
Across the nation, about 26 women (for the 26 stops) can say they were on stage with Daye and hopefully have a friend that captured footage of it. Lucky has a fan escorted on stage when the setlist reaches “Love You Too Much”, a fan favorite off Painted. Daye sings the passionate song about unrequited love to his stage guest. It turns out a few ways: the fan sings along, are in shock of the moment, or in some cases steal the spotlight. This quickly became an anticipated part of the show, prompting attendees to dress to the nines for the possibility of being chosen. It even left fans at home waiting to live vicariously through the clips on TikTok and Instagram. Jazmine Sullivan and Ella Mai are among the ladies that sat alongside the New Orleans crooner for the steamy segment.
Artists have introduced similar aspects of fan interaction into their shows, from Janet Jackson’s All For You Tour with the mechanical bondage on “Would You Mind” to Usher’s OMG tour with the contoured couch action on “Trading Places”. Daye is taking lessons from iconic performances by giving fans a performance they won’t easily forget.
Whether he was seducing women, playing bass guitar, or riffing and running into the mic, the CandyDrip tour was one for the books. He’s got the musical recognition down, hence the sold-out tour.
