Teyana Taylor and the Becoming of a Woman

image

From her days on My Super Sweet 16 to appearing on red carpet events, whether it’s for her versatile, androgynous style or her relationship with beau Iman Shumpert, Teyana Taylor has shown that she is one to be reckoned with. Her new album, VII, which has been long awaited by many, is now available for everyone to listen, relate, and vibe to.

For a long time Teyana Taylor as an artist had been in question. We know her for her unique sense of style and her friendships with artists, such as Chris Brown, but we always wanted to know the talent Taylor possessed that had even brought her to the spotlight. She had been featured on songs with rappers, such as Pusha T and Kanye West, and has even appeared in movies alongside Tyler Perry in Madea’s Big Happy Family, but what musical skills did she actually own?

From listening to VII, I have to say that this album represents the becoming of a woman. The album seems to tackle the emotions almost every female has when involved with someone they care about. Her album has a range of slow, sultry songs which are kind of reminiscent of Sade and Lauryn Hill to transitioning to more upbeat songs. Her album is able to put one at ease as well as think about someone they care or have once cared about. Personally, I like how this album is a reflection of a once skateboarding teen who was once signed to Pharell to a sensual, young woman, now signed to GOOD Music. In all, VII is a representation of Teyana Taylor no only as an artist, but defining what it is to be a woman.
