We can always count on Drake to release lit music strictly for the ladies. Similar to 2010’s hip-hop classic Fancy, “Nice For What” is the definition of a girls night out anthem. The song is full of inspirational lyrics to encourage every woman to level up on a past lover and live her best life.
On and off the screen Drake pays homage to some of Hollywood’s female favorites. Featuring women like Issa Rae, Traci Ellis Ross, Tiffany Haddish, Letitia Wright, Yara Shahidi, Misty Copeland, and many more. The Canadian lyricist even arranged for female director 22-year old Karena Evans, to be the beauty and brains behind the vision. Talk about girl power!
Its upbeat club-like sound, over a combination of high-hats, and a sample of Lauren Hill’s Ex-factor is copacetic. What we admire most is that it’s a celebration of women for women. Drake highlights women in a positive light without the average video vixen vibes. Instead, he displays the stars as women in different power structures and emphasizes different feminine qualities. Issa Rae takes the lead as a girl boss sitting at the head of a table full of white men, Zoe Saldana in the role of a loving mother with her kids, and Yara Shahidi as a hardworking college student.
Women are the future whether we acknowledge it or not. These roles may seem like average opportunities, but they’re much more. Obtaining an education and being a female boss are positions that were not offered to women in the past. Thank you, Drake, for shedding light on women in a positive way. Hopefully, this will start a trend for other male artists to start respecting women in their music videos.
