Tay Keith Hits Number One: A Look Over An Incredible Year for the Super-producer

As far as producers go, Tay Keith has undeniably owned 2018. The Memphis-born Song-creator has worked from start to finish and ensured that his tag (“Tay Keith, f*ck these n*gga’s up”) has become the most iconic of the last few months. Keith has orchestrated his rise in such an organized fashion, that his biggest win of the year, arrives at the perfect time; the apex of 2018.

Tay Keith began the year with a major look from a Canadian chart-topper. Toronto’s dominant force Drake hopped on BlocBoy JB’s ‘Look Alive’. The song not only spotlighted Blocboy but boosted Tay Keith’s career and led to in-depth interviews with the likes of FADAR following the release of the track.

Next, it was time for Keith to really carve out his influence on an upcoming rappers trajectory, without a major co-sign. His informal proteges of choice? Rico Nasty and Key Glock. With Nasty, he created arguably her biggest tracks of the year. ‘In The Air’ was praised by XXL, Pitchfork and other prominent platforms. Focusing on Key Glock next, Tay Keith engineered the trap artists theme throughout his recent project ‘Glockoma’.

Engineering at least a quarter of the album, Keith worked hard at sounding consistent, yet exciting throughout his backing on songs such as ‘Since 6ix’, ‘Life Is Great’ and ‘Dope’. What’s interesting is that the listener still knows that it’s a Tay Keith production, but he smoothly alternates between ghoulish, darker soundscapes and club, keyboard-heavy instrumentals – a testament to his diversity and growth.

What’s even more shocking is Tay Keith’s work outside of music to ensure success. Alongside his industry progression, the Southern newcomer managed to complete University and will graduate with a degree in Media Management next week (December 15th) at Middle Tennessee State University.

Finally, Keith arrived at number one on Billboard this week with Travis Scott with ‘Sicko Mode’, and followed up with a Grammy nomination for the song. It’ll be interesting to see if the producer can build on the momentum in 2019.
