Why Society Should Stop Telling Music/Art Students They Won’t Make Any Money

There has always been a frigid stigma for anyone who wants to study the Fine Arts. Why is it that some people believe art is not as important as anything else? That is the first question we must dissect and oppose.

People often downplay the importance of artistic expression. It is apparently, not as important as becoming a doctor or nurse, or a lawyer, and definitely not as important as becoming a cop. Yet, these are the same folks that watch reality television, take time to download music, and are always looking for the next clothing trend. So does the notion of respect not follow the necessity in society? Well, aside from the obvious, these people are too scared to be as bold.

Without artists, the development of culture would fall flat. Culture is essentially, a form of art to every group of people. If these people can partake in their own subcultures, why downplay it when someone wants to pursue their dream within the art of it? Why ridicule artists who work hard to major in these arts wherever they go?

Artists will make money for as long as you decide to support them. Whether you yourself are an artist or not. The artists you look up to today were once way behind the finish line and if this is taken into consideration more often, it would give equal opportunities to all types of artists. More importantly, it would grant opportunities to people who are multi-talented.

Multi-Talented Chadwick Boseman as James Brown in Get On Up, Boseman is a stellar example of an actor, director, singer and dancer.

Imagine what the world would have been like without music? What would we as a society verbalize if nothing was about self-expression?

Why is everything about how much money you’ll make, rather than how happy you are in what you do?

If you’ve ever thought to yourself that artists are not worthy of your coins, you might want to scrap that notion and remind yourself of all the things around you that are art. Think of the many people it took to make your favorite movie, or brand your favorite artists. What made you buy the products you buy?

And for artists, keep on making. Because without us, they would not know what they know now. Continue breaking through the fear/insecurities of your art, continue showing those that you are worth more than pocket change, and express yourself- because too often people let their expression fester within. You are brave for doing otherwise.

Does art have more value to you than just money? Do you believe artists make a mistake by not studying something more “rational”? Leave your comments on what you think!
