Has Social Media Made Us Nonchalant About Our Feelings?

Everyone wants to be a “savage”. When did being numb or nonchalant about your feelings become a good thing?

In today’s generation, to feel a sense of anything is like committing a crime, more like a capital offense. That’s a joke but I’m serious about our casual emotions. Especially growing up in a society where social media can be a dominating force within anything you do. In this aspect, let’s focus on “feelings”…

What is the meaning of feeling?

According to the Webster dictionary, feeling is defined as “an emotional state or reaction”, “the overall quality of one’s awareness”, “often unreasoned opinion or belief”, “capacity to respond emotionally especially with the higher emotion”, ‘the undifferentiated background of one’s awareness considered apart from any identifiable sensation, perception, or thought.”

Envision this. Male or female, imagine you are dating someone. Let’s say it’s been 6 months, your feelings are growing for them massively but one day you see your “significant” tweet; “Who needs a heart? Feelings are for the weak.”

Pardon on that.

Now, you are beginning to second guess what you are feeling, simply because of the tweet you saw.

Questions begin to enter your head like, “Does this person really like me?”, “Am I doing too much?”, “What if they stop liking me if I tell them how I feel?”

Is the heart a playground that is meant to be broken or to be built up again for reconstruction?

Deep right? Think about it. Take it in.

When you think of a playground, it is a place where you go to play, relieve some stress, enjoy the air, and all of the above. However, after a while, the playground begins to get old, and broken down because of being mistreated.

Feelings have been put in the same category in today’s age. Becoming a playground of mixed emotions that are surpassed which begin to be mistreated because of fear. So, what is formed is an attitude of “I don’t care” when in reality you are low key dying on the inside.

Social media has become a platform where you can express everything; good, bad, and indifference. Forming a world of illusion and malfunction in reality; that can begin to be a subconscious of events that developed into a competition that should never be.

It’s a sickening competition. Why? It’s sick because it is a competition of “who can be the most heartless?”, “who can be the most damaged?”

What happened to expressing your feelings through sweet gestures and not seeming overbearing? What happened to love notes? When did affection become wrong?
