Versatile Beginnings
OWO, the Nigerian American artist got her start singing in the church and writing poetry. Due to her upbringing in Maryland, she witnessed various genres of music and her parents’ love for music.
“It [singing] is something that I grew up doing in church. I kind of shied away from it for a while. It got to a point where it was like ‘Alright, you got to put out these songs you’ve been writing.’ It is something that started off as just writing for main terms of poetry and writing melodies, harmonies, lyrics and songs,” OWO said.
OWO coins herself as an ‘Afro-Electro-RnB’ artist. She appreciates her versatility as an artist and uses it stand out. She intentionally fuses music to connect to her upbringing in Nigeria and Maryland.
“When it comes to being in DC and go-go music, it was just part of the culture. Hearing the congas was normal. That is why drums are heavily influenced in my sound. Not just because of D.C. but also because of my Nigerian culture as well and that being the beat and rhythm of everything.”

The Growth of An Artist & Individual
OWO explains SEEDs as a story about a young women who is going through a journey of being comfortable with the changes throughout life while honoring her roots. She wants it to be a reflection of all the people that have poured into her selflessly.
“It was a journey that I knew I needed to take. I often talk about having the responsibility of being the first generation immigrant child. You have a lot of responsibilities because your parents are not natives of this country. When they come here they expect that their offspring will do well and will succeed in their terms of success. But I knew that I would have to define my term of success. I knew that eventually my parents would understand and they will appreciate it. They will come to be proud of what I’ve done for myself as an artist,” OWO said.
OWO is dedicated to elevating her ‘Afro-Electro-RnB’ sound and making it her own. She would to continue to refine her sound and make her mark.
“We all genre bend. You hear elements of any and everything. That’s just our generation. I think the internet has made our world very borderless. We get to hear sounds and see sounds from people all over the world. I think with what I am making right now is really definitive and I want to continue to stamp my mark,” OWO said.
