This summer, Kathreen Sterling is heading to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as Haiti’s first Female Olympic Boxer! As a Haitian-American woman in a ruthlessly male-dominated arena, Kathreen is not your typical boxing champ. After graduating from the Pratt Institute with a B.F.A. in Fashion Design, Sterling began her career in the corporate working world.

History in the Making

Sterling found her way into the ring for the first time in 2016. Defying all limitations and obstacles placed upon her, she has remained true to herself as she has built her craft over the years. In her first year of competition, she placed 3rd in the U.S. for her weight class.

“For Haiti, First.”

Sterling has always stood in the pride of who she is as a Black Haitian woman. In addition to a strong sense of pride, Sterling intends to fight from her arena to support Haiti. She also wishes to deepen her connection with Haiti and improve the conditions in Haiti. Therefore, it was a crucial decision she made to further her boxing career representing Haiti.

Kathreen Sterling is a living example of limitlessness! She defies all categories and stereotypes. A powerful example of standing boldly and proudly in your truth and honoring your history. She also reminds us that we are all capable of furthering the fight for our people, no matter where our passions lie. Liberation work is not a monolith, it can look like so many different things, there are so many ways. It’s a no-brainer that Sterling is going to dominate in Tokyo this summer! We can’t wait to watch and cheer her on. The games begin on July 23, 2021.
