As many of you know two days ago was election day. Americans had the opportunity to vote for governors, congress people, legislation, and other municipal offices and issues. A big day for the country for many reasons!
One, it was an opportunity to restore the balance in the government by checking the Republican Executive Branch with a Democratic (or more even) Legislative Branch. Two, voter turnout has always been an issue in America, but after our most recent presidential election that trend is wavering. Three, the country could produce their first black, female governor.
In Georgia, a historically red state, Stacey Abrams is running as a democrat against Brian Kemp, republican. She faced a lot of adversity in her campaign. Besides her race and gender, Abrams ran against the sitting party in Georgia and the country. Not to mention the many complaints against Georgia Secretary of State/Abrams opponent, Kemp, for attempting to dissuade Abrams supporters. How being Secretary of State and running for governor in the same state isn’t a conflict of interest I do not understand.
Despite the accusations Kemp will be Georgia’s next governor. However, for those who are disappointed find solace in the fact that democrats won the House of Representatives restoring the checks and balances the American government thrives on. Also, women of color are still taking the country by storm win or lose. Abrams may not have had her victory on Tuesday, but Ayanna Pressley won a seat as the first congresswoman of color to represent the state of Massachusetts.
