On January 4, 2022, nine HBCUs (historically black colleges and universities) reported a series of bomb threats. The schools targeted included Spelman College, Howard University, and Xavier University of Louisiana. Students, staff, and faculty were advised to evacuate. Authorities responded and found no active devices on any of the campuses.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, has condemned the bomb threats targeting nine Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) nationwide. Earlier today, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper made a statement concerning the threats.
“With violent incidents targeting members of minority communities on the rise around the country, it is essential that all religious and political leaders nationwide speak out against these threats,” Hopper stated. “The American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.”
CAIR’s mission includes protecting civil rights, enhancing the understanding of Islam, and promoting justice as well as empowering American Muslims.
It is not known if the threats were racially motivated or connected. Currently, the suspect is unknown.
