Fashion lovers and creatives will marvel at this year’s collections. Designers like Kim Shui and Raisa Vanessa came through with unique and trendy pieces. Chaance, a luxury athleticwear brand, showcased their collection while performing stunts on a prerecorded video. Longtime designers like Jason Wu and Brandon Maxwell captured the essence of winter elegance in their pieces.

NYFW Day 2 Overview

Jason Wu ’22 Collection

Jason Wu is no stranger to the fashion scene. Known for his elegant dresses and celebrity clientele, Wu takes inspiration from the 50s and incorporates it into his collection. Frills, mesh, neutrals (with a pop of color), and spotted patterns were prominent in Wu’s collection.

Brandon Maxwell ’22 Collection

Brandon Maxwell is the designer for the stars. Maxwell’s work has been seen on celebrities like Lady Gaga, Kerry Washington, and Oprah Winfrey. For his 2022 collection, Brandon Maxwell switches his usual glamorous style to a more relaxed and comfortable style with a hint of glamour.

Raisa Vanessa ’22 Collection

Created by twin sisters, Raisa and Vanessa Sason, Raisavanessa is a couture brand that has exquisitely unique pieces. According to the brand, their clothing can be described as “a fusion of maximalist, dimensional yet sexy fashion designs met with artisanal tailoring”. Raisavanessa is known for its exaggerated tops and embellishments. The brand incorporates ’80’s and futuristic styles into its pieces.

In their ‘22 collection, Raisa Vanessa showcased mainly black and silver pieces enveloped with crystals. Pieces with pops of blue, green, and purple were featured briefly towards the end of show. The pieces were formal yet had an enticing edginess to them; almost as if you were dressed to go to an after-party at night and a socialite brunch the next morning.

When you think of sex appeal, Kim Shui should be on your mind. Shui’s collection consisted of a mix of pastel colors and neutral pieces with a diverse range of fabrics. Many pieces were based in tweed fabric and accented with faux fur. Some of Shui’s pieces that have gotten major attention are her sheer black tops with sequined dragons, a provocative yet stylish piece that highlights Shui’s Chinese background.

NYFW Day 3 Overview

Day three of fashion week was vibrant – figuratively, and literally! Not only were collections full of color, but the diversity amongst designers was outstanding. The show kicked off with the In The Blk showcase, an event featuring collections from black-owned brands like House of Aama, Khiry, and Third Crown. Then, Image showcased their beautiful avant-garde collection. By the end of the day, Sergio Hudson’s fashion show took fashion lovers by surprise as fashion icons Beverly Johnson and Veronica Webb walked the stage. Day three of NYFW was definitely the day black brands and designers got their shine.

House of Aama “Sea Water ’22” Collection

Cofounded by mother and daughter, House of Aama is a black-owned luxury brand to look out for. Mixed prints are everything with House of Aama. The majority of House of Aama’s collection (named “Sea Water”) features colorful mixed prints and fabrics that suggest the influence of ’60s and ’70’s African fashion.

Dur Doux

Another black-owned brand that needs to be on your to-buy list is Dur Doux. Created by mother-daughter duo, Cynthia and Najla Burt, Dur Doux is an affordable luxury lifestyle brand that intertwines avant-garde and modern styles. For their ’22 collection, Dur Doux incorporates bold, monochromatic colors and vibrant patterns in their pieces. Common colors showcased in the Dur Doux show were shades of blue, purple, and green (with a dash of pink and orange). WNBA players Betnijah Laney (New York Liberty) and Napheesa Collier (Minnesota Lynx) were featured in the show.

Sergio Hudson ’22 Collection

Sergio Hudson is a celebrity favorite that is making big waves in the fashion industry. Designing clothes for celebrities like Michelle Obama and Beyonce catapulted his name into fame. Hudson’s pieces are never boring. For the ’22 collection, Hudson sticks to his usual tasteful and sleek style with bold, monochromatic color choices.

Just when you think the show couldn’t get any better, it does. Sergio Hudson gave fans and critics a treat in having fashion icons Beverly Johnson, Veronica Webb, and Gisele Zelauy to participate in his show.

Area ’22 Collection

9 / 7

Area’s signature style is described as being “witty, inherently glamorous, playfully decadent, and injected with a pop of energy”. And that it is. The entirety of Area’s collection is over-the-top couture. The crystal-covered pieces and oversized crystal-covered accents made watching the show more alluring. It’s safe to say that ’80’s drag couture and the New York club scene have a big influence on Area’s style.
