New Year, New Closet!

It’s time to clean out your closet and start anew in the New Year. There is no better feeling than organizing your space but, if you’re like most people, you’re not sure where to start. So, before the New Year, we’ve compiled a list of six tips to make organizing your closet space a breeze.

Set Aside Some Time

Setting aside time to clean and organize your closet is essential. Scheduling a specific time and day, preferably when you have hours of availability, is the best way to ensure that you have the energy to improve your closet situation.

Away With the Old

We have a tendency to accumulate a lot of clothing over the course of a year without removing the items we don’t even wear anymore. Fashion trends change all the time, and if you’re someone who wants to stay on top of the latest trends, you’re probably overindulging and not realizing what pieces are evergreen versus last year’s trend. This will result in more clothes and a cluttered closet. So now is the time to get rid of those old things.

Decide On Which Items To Keep

As you begin to remove the old, consider which pieces you should keep, donate, or toss. Try on these clothes one last time to get a feel for them, then FaceTime a friend to get their opinion on where the item should go in the three piles. This allows you to explore deep into your closet without mistakenly tossing or giving a specific item away before you’re ready.

Donation, Donation, Donation

So you went through your closet and did the necessary purging. However, you’re unsure about where you want to give your belongings. There are numerous donation centers that are looking for gently worn clothing, including The Salvation Army, Goodwill, United Way, American Red Cross, Dress for Success, consignment shops and more. It’s always a wonderful feeling to be able to box up your old beloved items and donate them to those in need.

Sell Those Items

Who doesn’t enjoy putting some cash in their pockets? When you start cleaning out your closet, you’ll probably come across some items that you’d like to get some cash back for before giving them away totally. Keep in mind that these items shouldn’t be completely out of date or worn out, so you can at least make some money off of them.

Use Containers

Investing in closet storage bins might be incredibly beneficial. Shoe racks, tidy stackable boxes, hooks, and shelving are examples of storage containers that can help you keep all your items neatly stored away. These particular products are available at stores such as Ikea, Target, and The Container Store. Plus, they will fit perfectly in your closet and create an organized place for your belongings.

Sort by Category

Now that your stuff has been given and stowed away, it’s time for the last step. Placing matching items of clothing together can help you stay organized by making finding and putting items away a snap, while keeping your closet space clean.

While organizing your closet may seem to be a tedious task, it can be a great way to start the New Year. Allowing yourself to donate or remove goods that are no longer useful is extremely beneficial. Get organized to save time and make the most of your space in the new year.
