New Orleans Begins Confederate Monument Removal

New Orleans Removes Confederate Monuments

New Orleans is removing several Confederate statues! City workers began the removal process while it was still dark in order to avoid conflict with statue supporters.

In an interview with the Associated Press, New Orleans mayor Mitch Landreiu says, “There’s a better way to use the property these monuments are on and a way that better reflects who we are.”

Landreiu has made the decision to move forward and keep the identity of the contractors hidden. However, since the official removal announcement contractors hired by the city have faced severe backlash by statue supporters.

The first statue removed was the Liberty Monument, which honored the Crescent City White League. The three other statues up for removal are ones honoring Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis.

This marks a big step forward for New Orleans, a deep south city where confederate passions run deep.
