Netflix Plans to Release 80 New Original Movies Next Year

Streaming giant Netflix wants to put out 80 original films in 2018. Next year’s content budget could skyrocket to $8 billion, according to chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

Netflix plans to put out a new original movie on average every four and a half days in 2018, for an eye-popping total of 80 releases.

The films range from the typical “million-dollar Sundance hit,” he said. “All the way up to something on a much bigger scale… Bright (starring Will Smith) at the end of this year…The Irishman (starring Robert De Niro), which is currently in production.”

Netflix’s target for original movies compares with a 2017 slate of about 50 film titles that it has released or is scheduled to debut globally. Those include comedies, dramas, anime, action movies, foreign films and documentaries.

Furthermore, Sarandos cited strong reviews for Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories. It is a festival favorite. It stars Dustin Hoffman and Adam Sandler.

Its Rotten Tomatoes score of 93% puts it in rare company in the original streaming movie game. Once the current slate rolls out, including The Irishman in early 2019, we’re in for great films!

“People will start seeing the potential for this big movie initiative.” Sarandos said.
