Missy Elliott’s “I’m Better” Music Video Breakdown

The brand new video for “I’m Better” by Missy Elliott Ft. Lamb is made up of so many perfect pieces, that I decided to break it down for you MEFeater style…

Music

“I’m Better” is a bit more mellow than Elliott’s last single, “WTF.” The songs are very different, but amazing in their own ways. “I’m Better” teeters back and forth between a simple consistent beat and slightly trap infused one. The song is produced by and features artist Lamb, an up comer in the rap game. Elliot has not released a full album since 2005, and if “I’m Better” and “WTF” are any indication of the direction she could be headed in we are on the edge of our seats waiting for what is next from Missy E!

Entertainment

The video was co-directed by Elliott and Dave Meyers, and Elliott choreographed the video with Sean Bankhead. The choreography is so in sync with he music. Elliott and her dancers hit every beat hard and add in some props in surprising ways. Missy’s signature sass and tendency toward the flashy are extremely prevalent in the video. The futuristic props and surprising special effects juxtapose the seemingly commonplace settings to make the dancers and Missy Elliott pop. But don’t take my word for it check out Elliott’s directing, choreography, rapping, singing, dancing, and fashion for yourself!

Fashion

Missy is no stranger to making a statement, so of course this new video is no exception. However, in the “I’m Better” video Elliott makes fashion and social statements. In the pool scene of the video Elliott is wearing a bedazzled jacket that says “save the humans.”  This is a common phrase in the fight against climate change, but can also be applied to the recent executive order by President Trump to deny refugees from finding sanctuary in America. Elliot has a strong voice and she is using it!

One of the most stunning outfits of the video is the black letter style jacket with red feathers. This nearly all black ensemble is completed and enhanced by the styling. Elliott’s smooth, jet black, bowl cut covers her eyes and helps divert all attention to her lip stick. Her lips are outlined perfectly and from time-to-time they light up! You won’t be able to keep your eyes off the complete look and the futuristic theme of the whole video’s wardrobe.
