#MEFeature: Miguel Wilson Shares his Rise in Fashion, Dressing Celebs, and More

Designer and businessman Miguel Wilson is known for his bold fabric choices, publicly acclaimed looks, and distinct calling for the groom’s side of wedding wear. Wilson has dressed celebrities like Cam Newton, Ludacris, Christian De La Fuente, New Edition, and many more. His rapid success is due to his business savvy and the uniqueness of his brand. We had the chance to sit down with Miguel Wilson on Monday and speak about what he has done to get to where he is, and what we have to look forward to.

How did you get started in fashion?

“In college I majored in business,” Wilson says, but after he partnered with an old friend of his to make suits. Later, the two diverged and started their own clothing company. After a while the pair ended up selling it. However, that was not the end for Wilson as we all know. Wilson started out in a more ready to wear field, but has evolved to high-end wedding menswear because, as Wilson puts it, “[the] wedding niche is a good niche for me to be in.”

Who are some of your favorite designers and influences?

“I like Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford, Versace, and Gucci.”

Wilson also works closely with his father Rafael Escoto (pictured below) who styles and models some of Miguel’s looks. Escoto was a big time interior designer back in Washington D.C., where Wilson is from, so it seems like design runs in the family.

What are you working on now?

“I am moving to a larger store front, and starting up my online store,” replied Wilson.  He plans to move from his current storefront in Phipps Plaza in Atlanta to one three times its size. He is also going to be introducing The Wedding Store for Men Online. Wilson currently has a website for his own brand, Miguel Wilson Collection, but this new one will give his clients access to Miguel Wilson originals at lower prices. Both platforms are expected in early summer, so keep an eye out!

What can we look forward to from you?

“I am working on releasing a book, and a TV show as well.” The book, to be entitled “Because it’s His Day Too,” will be a pictorial. Made up of some of Wilson’s favorite and most popular looks. As for the TV show Wilson is envisioning, “the male version of ‘Say Yes to the Dress.’ To show the side of a wedding that many don’t see.” Wilson wants to show the nation that, “it’s his day to!”

There aren’t any set in stone release dates for either the book or Tv show yet, but these future ventures go to show Wilson’s versatility and how expansive the fashion industry is.
