Mia Love, the pioneering politician who became the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. Congress, has died at the age of 49 after a courageous battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Her family announced that she passed away peacefully at her home in Saratoga Springs, Utah, surrounded by loved ones.

A Historic Journey Rooted in the American Dream

Born Ludmya Bourdeau on December 6, 1975, in Brooklyn, New York, Mia Love was the daughter of Haitian immigrant parents. Her journey epitomized the American dream. She graduated from the University of Hartford with a degree in fine arts. She later moved to Utah, where she converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Breaking Barriers in Utah and Washington

Love’s political career began in 2003 when she was elected to the city council of Saratoga Springs, Utah. In 2009, she made history by becoming the city’s first female mayor. Her political rise continued in 2014 when she was elected to represent Utah’s 4th Congressional District. She went on to serve two terms in the House until 2019.

During her tenure, she focused on banking regulation, budget policy, and immigration reform.

A Brave Battle with Cancer

Doctors diagnosed Mia Love with glioblastoma in 2022. After enduring aggressive treatment, doctors informed her in early 2025 that the cancer was no longer responding. In her final days, Love penned a heartfelt open letter to the American people, reflecting on her life, faith, and hopes for the future of the nation.

My living wish and fervent prayer for you and for this nation is that the America I have known is the America you fight to preserve.
Mia Love, from her final letter

Mia Love is survived by her husband, Jason Love, and their three children. Beyond politics, she was known for her grace, integrity, and unwavering faith. Her presence inspired young Black women and conservative women across the country, making her a powerful figure in the evolving landscape of American leadership.

A Legacy of Grace, Courage, and Historic Firsts

Mia Love’s life was defined by faith, resilience, and trailblazing leadership. From the daughter of Haitian immigrants to a historic member of Congress, she shattered ceilings and did so with elegance and resolve.

Her final words serve as a lasting message to all Americans—a call to action rooted in unity, patriotism, and hope. As we remember her contributions to public service and the lives she touched, may her legacy inspire future generations to lead boldly, with both conviction and compassion.
