New York Fashion Week has been here and gone for another season. It brought about its usual mix of glamour, street-style and creativity. However, this year it had a little somethin’ extra; culture and diversity. MEFeater was ALL over this so we took a recap of the fashion at NYFW and what it had to offer.

One of the more controversial fashion designers, Philipp Plein, hosted a cultural show with celebrity performers and famous faces; his women’s and men’s shows simultaneous. ‘Good Gone Bad’ his motto. The major standouts for men were acid washed jeans, crocodile print, and leather jackets. There was a daring dark side to Plein’s designs with a mix of a fairytale in the form of Rapunzel hair, silk fabric, cropped t-shirts and long woven skirts for women. Minimalist body harnesses to top it off. Philipp Plein ended his extravaganza with famous models Adriana Lima & Irina Shayk.

Rihanna, Creative Director of Puma (&designer Melissa Battifarano), has been a standout star of fashion week holding FentyXPuma as an epic motocross show. (See here for more.) The star is creating the perfect sports brand in that her shows are the perfect integration of runway and athleisure. Something fresher with the FentyXPuma show; the brand’s famous creepers took a backseat while stompers were the main footwear focus. Swimwear, cropped pieces and a neon and khaki color scheme were main features. A big accessory trend of this season; fanny packs.

LaQuan Smith who boasts a celebrity clientele of Kim Kardashian-West and Rihanna brought about heritage in his creations for SS18. This is a designer who’s making waves by being true to his own style and in turn, challenging the ‘same old, same old’ of fashion week catwalks. Shayne Oliver paid homage to Helmut Lang in his debut for the brand with a subtle reworking of his Spring 2001 ‘When Love Comes To Town’ show. Jason Wu celebrated ten years at his namesake couture label with a much-admired runway of casual designs citing an influence of 20th-century designer Madame Grès remembered for her iconic pleating techniques. Another creative director and designer, Jeremy Scott, had a celebration. Scott was bestowing his catwalk show as his fans and critics alike remarked his twenty-year anniversary in the fashion industry.

One other designer that was impressional with his show was Christian Siriano (as you will see from Leslie Jones’ reaction below ?) who has become increasingly inclusive of diversity in his shows. The reaction afterward was not only to do with the design aspect of Siriano’s runway but the age, ethnic and size diversity. A big win for those involved and the industry also.
