Majid Jordan Takes a Step Forward with “The Space Between”

Majid Jordan is closer to finding their niche. You will learn this with a single listen of their sophomore LP. With the voice of Majid Al Maskati and the production of Jordan Ullman, The Space Between is a formidable offering of alternative pop and R&B. Majid Jordan wears their influences on their sleeve and place a futuristic spin on it. The duo takes more risk than they did in their debut; taking a step closer to finding their own genuine sound that’s best for them.

The Space Between is an atmospheric journey. In many instances, the album is ready for the dance floor. In others, a late night car ride through the city. It goes several places, but those locations are still connected. “Gave Your Love Away” is a delightful pop ballad that is exemplary of the atmosphere Majid Jordan have the intention to create. Their strong point, like many other OVO signees, is their love songs. “OG Heartthrob” is a love song with a youthful spirit. By all accounts, it is pure emotion and displays devotion to the narrator’s lover.

“You” is another solid track. It’s somber, romantic ballad that plays to the strengths of the vocalist. Majid Al Maskati’s voice is somewhat raspy, but it doesn’t sound too strenuous to make the song unappealing.

“Phases” blends introspectiveness with pop bliss. There are lyrics about humble beginning from their homeland to North America, and the changes of lifestyle that spawned from their success. I came to this country, didn’t know a damn thing/18 year old and in need of planning/Thought I was ready, I wasn’t ready, Majid sings. Jordan Ullman plays his role well; adding fitting instrumentations to give several songs different feels.

As said before this is a step forward artistically for them, but it’s clear that it’s still uphill from here. If they want to be in the fold with other alternative acts, they should be even bolder. If they want to camouflage with mainstream acts, they aren’t even following that path. They are stuck in the middle, that might be where they want to be. The potential of Majid Jordan is still plentiful.
