Love and Pizza Rolls: The Debate on Gender Roles in Relationships

Social media has brewed up a storm over the topic of women cooking for their partners. While some view this act as harmless and thoughtful, others feel that women are upholding harmful traditional gender roles. Yet, we have to consider the pros and cons of traditional gender roles in modern dating. Let’s look deeper into what love and gender roles mean in modern relationships.

Love is not transactional.

To be frank, dating in this generation is hard; no one wants to listen, communicate, or take accountability. It’s as if you have to jump through hoops to prove you’re worthy of being loved. So, it’s understandable to see why some people feel the need to count favors in their relationship. However, it does get tiring to feel that you have to watch how much you give to someone. If you find yourself counting the favors in your relationship, step back and examine the state of your relationship. Ask yourself why you feel that you have to count favors. Is your partner not contributing to the relationship as much as you’d want them to? Have you communicated your expectations for your partner and the relationship?

Love is not selfish.

There are two sides of a coin, so let’s dive into the downside of catering to your partner: overplaying your part. If you’re a people-pleaser,

Love is safe.

Your partner is supposed to be your home and your peace. Love is supposed comfort you. Let’s normalize a relationship where love isn’t stressful or traumatic. Your partner should make you feel safe and protected.
