Alternative Hip Hop rose to fame in the late 1980s, allowing artists to experiment with musical elements from genres other than hip hop. So, what is Alternative Hip Hop, exactly? The phrase is defined as “a subgenre of hip-hop music that incorporates elements of funk, soul, punk, and alternative rock,” according to the Masterclass definition. To elaborate, “the subgenre defies the conventions of mainstream hip-hop, gangster rap, and trap music, blurring the lines to create a distinct blend of sounds matched to a diverse range of lyrical content,” which was unheard of until pioneers like A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, KRS-One, and Outkast, to name a few, leapt onto the scene.
Alternative Hip Hop allows artists to branch out from tough, gritty gangster rap and experiment with other ways of conveying stories. Outkast’s “Roses” or A Tribe Called Quest’s “Can I Kick It?” come to mind. Both tracks have a classic tempo, as well as colorful lyrics that go beyond street violence, drugs, and other common themes in mainstream rap. Alternative hip hop welcomes more complex sounds, allowing for more creative freedom and expression in production and even style.
Consider how Outkast, particularly André 3000, pushed the envelope in terms of his appearance which was a bit taboo in mainstream/gangster rap at the time but contributed personality to the music.
Despite the major impact, alternative hip hop, has had years of hard pause and replay, until now! Many artists are experimenting with this sub-genre, and it’s thrilling to see others being inspired by the pioneers and giving it a shot in their own right.

Earthgang
Earthgang, a Dreamville-signed Atlanta-based group, is sometimes compared to Outkast. They deliver a bit of conscious and gangster rap in between their up-beat tracks. But make no mistake: they’re authentic Alternative Hip Hop musicians with their own distinct style.
Topaz Jones
Topaz Jones is a rapper from New Jersey who uses funk, soul, and occasional singing in his music. His current album, Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma, is a terrific example of this genre. It’s not only is a fantastic piece of work but it also recounts his formative years with confidence and a hard-hitting narrative.
