Kerry Washington is set to Executive Produce “The Mothers” Film

Kerry Washington

Scandal actress Kerry Washington has ventured into new territory. Her on-screen career spans as far back as 1994, but now Washington has decided to enter the realm of producing.

Last summer, she starred in HBO’s television movie Confirmation. The movie is based on the hearings of Clarence Thomas. Thomas was nominated to the Supreme Court in 1991, but was accused of sexual harassment by Anita Hill. Washington played Hill, but she produced the movie as well! The film was well received by critics. She is also slated to produce a new ABC drama called Patrol. The show is about female LAPD officers who have a secret from their shared past that resurfaces.

With this in mind, it is no surprise that Kerry Washington has made plans to produce The Mothers. It will be a Warner Bros. film adaptation of the Brit Bennett novel. The book takes place in a California neighborhood, where a girl named Nadia is mourning her own mother’s recent suicide. She begins a brief relationship with the local pastor’s son and becomes pregnant. The teen has to navigate abortion, friendship, and the impact of the subsequent cover-up. The story is told by the town’s “mothers,” creating a mature perspective on Nadia’s life. The older women in Nadia’s world are sure to make for interesting narration in the film adaption. Washington will be producing the film with Natalie Krinsky, known for her story editing work on Gossip Girl.

Go Kerry! Will you go see The Mothers when it comes out?
