Jesse Williams is making a return to the Grey’s Anatomy set. He’s set to return as a guest star and director of the fifth episode of the upcoming Season 19 of the American medical drama. Williams will reprise his role as the people’s favorite, Dr. Jackson Avery. The new season, which is set to air on November 3 and is titled “When I Get to the Boarder,” will be the fourth episode of the show that Jesse has directed.
Jesse departed Grey’s Anatomy as the series regular in spring 2021 after 12 seasons. On May 6, 2021, in the Season 17 Episode “Look Up Child,” it was revealed that Jackson was leaving Grey Sloan Memorial to move to Boston to take over the family foundation. He was followed there by his ex, April (Sarah Drew), who relocated with their daughter.

Dr. Jackson Avery and Drew made a cameo appearance in the Season 18 finale last May, confirming that Jackson and April had rekindled their relationship by kissing in the elevator at Grey Sloan Memorial.
The fifth episode’s plot features Jackson and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) catching up when she goes on a road trip to Boston, where he currently lives with April and their daughter, Harriet. However, it is reported that Jackson’s long-time love, April Kepner, will not appear in episode 5. Instead, Debbie Allen will appear in her recurring role as Jackson’s mother, Catherine Fox. In August, Deadline reported that Ellen Pompeo, who plays the titular character, Dr. Meredith Grey on “Grey’s Anatomy,” will only appear in eight episodes of the show in season 19.

In other “When I Get to the Border” developments, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Addison (Kate Walsh) take a road trip to volunteer at a family planning center. However, a patient’s ectopic pregnancy leads to complications. Elsewhere, the interns play detective about Lucas’ (Niko Terho) relationship with Amelia (Caterina Scorsone).
It has been a busy year for Williams as he’s also served as a director on an ABC series—Rebel, from Grey’s showrunner and executive producer Krista Vernoff. It is reported that he’s also returning to Broadway in the baseball-themed Take Me Out, for which he was nominated for a Tony. An activist and a tech entrepreneur, he also executive produced the 2021 Oscar-winning film Two Distant Strangers.
