Jean Paul Gaultier, Balenciaga, And More Wow At Paris Haute Couture Week

Beginning Monday, July 4 and ending Thursday, July 7, 2022, Haute Couture Week turned the streets of Paris into a fashion museum displaying pleasantly abnormal and experimental designs. We saw shows from iconic fashion houses Schiaparelli, Iris Van Herpen, Dior, Chanel, Balenciaga, Margiela, Jean Paul Gaultier, Fendi, and many more. Read on for recaps of some of our fave shows.

Iris Van Herpen F/W 2022 Couture

Iris Van Herpen, the iconic Dutch fashion house, celebrated its 15-year anniversary with its Meta Morphism collection. Inspired by Ovid’s magnus opus poem, “Metamorphoses”, the collection is based on the idea of transhumanism – “Where man and technology exist in eternal fluctuation.” The symbolic designs capture the eerie, extraterrestrial tone and highlight the unique ways the human body can be framed as art.

The pieces appeared to breathe and sway like trees in a forest as the models traipsed down the runway.

The attention to sustainability was evident in the selection of materials ranging from 3D printed pieces using left-over cocoa shell beans to the use of laser-cut leaves and upcycled poly-silk.

Some of our favorite looks:

Tony Ward Couture

Recently worn by some of your celeb faves, Mary J. Blige and Yung Miami of the City Girls, Tony Ward Couture designs are sure to wow the showgoers and be seen on red carpets soon after.

Titled ‘Flowing Lines’, the collection plays with themes of geometric lines in pattern and texture.

Some of our favorite looks:

Balenciaga

Critics quickly flocked online to analyze the show. Many were surprised and even shocked to see celebs walking a couture show.

Nonetheless, Balenciaga continues to wow with artfully sculpted pieces featuring dramatic hourglass waistlines, sharp shoulders, and unusual silhouettes. Similar to the Coperni x JBL purse worn by Doja Cat to the Grammys, the handbags doubled as Bluetooth speakers.

Some of our favorite looks:

Many call Balenciaga a “social experiment” while others see the playfulness and experimental nature displayed at the House of Balenciaga.

Jean Paul Gaultier

Designer Olivier Rousteing was appointed as the guest couturier for this Jean Paul Gaultier collection. Rousteing is rumored to have brought at least 200 sketches to the fashion house.

The show began with several draped looks true to the classic JPG silhouette. The collection continued to wow and surprise with designs featuring alternative materials like aluminum and dried plants.

Models completed the runway striking a pose on an overheard balcony giving showgoers below a unique aspect.

Some of our favorite looks:

Schiaparelli

The collection, titled ‘Born Again’, features symbolic floral embellishments, blooming to frame the model’s faces.

Collection standouts are the fabulous oversized straw hats and earrings (Mugler anyone?) as well as the expertly crafted corsets.
