Is Alexander Wang canceled?

Is a canceling ever truly a canceling?

Two years ago, fashion enthusiasts around the world called for Alexander Wang’s cancellation after the designer was accused of nearly a dozen sexual assault allegations. Known for partying, the designer was accused of ruffy-ing, forcing others to drink in excess, and groping among various other allegations from models and partygoers.

Wang immediately went on the defensive calling the accusations baseless and fictitious. Despite denying these claims, Wang quietly met with the accusers, offered his regrets for “acting in a way that caused them pain”, then dipped out of the limelight for quite some time.

When fashion shows occurred in September 2021 and then February 2022 as scheduled, Wang’s name was notably missing from the lineup. Was this the end for Wang? Absolutely not. Wang continued to dress high-profile celebrities, released a short film promoting the “Pre-Fall 2021” womenswear collection, and saw steady sales throughout international markets. The show must go on.

Just last month, Wang returned to the runway after a 2+ year hiatus. Showgoers, brand enthusiasts, and ‘nosey Nellie’s packed into Los Angeles’ Chinatown Central Plaza to cast their eyes on the show.

Many social media critics called the show lackluster, deeming the designs cheap repackagings of popular designs. Models were called out for daring to walk in the show and many others flagged how tone-deaf it was for Wang to hold a show in a neighborhood dominated by Asian-Americans who are facing the effects of rapid gentrification. All in all, the show did not receive good reception despite the celeb support.

What do you think of Wang’s return? Are you burning all your designer goodies or separating the artist from the art?
