Remembering the Life of South African Actress Busi Lurayi

Busi Lurayi was a popular South African actress best known for starring in daring and amusing TV roles. The Netflix star has long been seen on TV screens however it feels like she was only getting started based on how exciting her career had become. Not much is known about her private life. Busi was mostly known for her TV career since joining the industry. She was reportedly found and declared dead in her home on Sunday, July 10th. The cause of death is still unknown. She was 36.

Biography

Female actress Busisiwe Lurayi was born in one of South Africa’s popular townships, Thembisa, The actress started out acting when she scooped a role in 2013 during a musical remake of Sarafina. Her debut came in 2005/2006 when she played Phumzile on the sitcom City Ses’la. The actress left City Ses’la after its first season to join the cast of the ITV drama series Wild At Heart. In 2008, she starred in the drama series – Sokhulu & Partners as Winnie Molepo. In 2011, she joined the cast of the SABC1 soapie Generations. FYI: Chris Brown also made an appearance on Generations in 2011 during his South Africa visit.

In 2011, she was featured as part of the main cast in the cable TV Mzansi Magic sitcom S.I.E.S. In 2019, the beauty came back with a bang in the world of theatre when the Market Theatre and US Mission in SA commemorated Black History Month with the South African premiere of Nina Simone Four Women. The show premiered on SABC 2 in September 2020. In December 2020, Busi starred in Netflix’s drama series – How To Ruin Christmas, where she plays the role of Tumi, a rebellious older sister who ruins everything including what should have been her sister’s picture-perfect Christmas wedding. Busi’s passing, unfortunately, occurred while the series is still in production for another season.

Busi Lurayi has lived a free, graceful, and purpose-filled life. She was a TV and theatre actress who was much adored by fellow actresses, productions, and fans. The actress died at age 36. She leaves behind her daughter whom she loved loudly and celebrated on her Instagram page. We celebrate Busi’s life and admire her for living a purposeful life. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.
