#BlackLeisure: House of Aama X Target Team up for a Vibrant Black History Month Collection

Elevation is the goal!! House of Aama has joined forces with Target for a colorful and vibrant Black History Month collection celebrating Black joy, play, and leisure. The mother-daughter duo, Rebecca Henry and Akua Shabaka have been continuously elevating their brand since its inception in 2015. Through their fashions, they tell the stories of spiritual expression, designing timeless garments that evoke nostalgia and explore the Black experience.

The 14-piece capsule collection with Target showcases lush and tropical items in various bright colors. It is a perfect depiction of Blackness, and ideal for vacationing. The collection includes cream-colored scarves and hues of blue, painting a picture of Black men and women enjoying days on the beach and relaxing endlessly. 

Bold and beautiful pieces compose the collection, including a vibrant sunset-hued backless halter dress that screams vacation vibes. A long-sleeved turtleneck jersey and scarf in the same red and orange hue are also included in the line. Cream-colored shirts and scoop neck jerseys add an extra relaxed and leisurely feel to the collection. Sensual satin ivory pieces include an upscale wrap top and matching skirt. Other standout pieces include a pink sheer top, a pink polka dot sweetheart dress, and a green striped maxi knit dress.

The pieces will surely make you want to book a relaxing getaway to a beautiful tropical oasis. The soft, light fabrics and bold colors are the right mix of fashion and comfort.

The capsule collection has been in development for a year and is being well-received by consumers. This marks another huge milestone for the business in its near decade-long journey into the fashion industry.

The Black History Month capsule collection is chic and affordable, with prices ranging from $12 to $45 and sizes from XS to 3X.

The Fall 2024 collection is an ode to the Los Angeles Jazz scene.

In addition to wowing consumers with their Target collaboration, House of Aama took it up a notch with the debut of their fall 24 NYFW collection. This line takes inspiration from the L.A. jazz scene, specifically Black musicians in the late ’50s and early ’60s. The collection, much like their Black History Month capsule, was full of vibrant colors and prints and told a story that deeply reflected their roots.

The mother-daughter duo has direct ties to the jazz community, as Shabaka’s father was an avant-garde artist during that period. To commemorate the era, the designers saw fit to show their line in their version of a jazz club.

“The root of [our collections] is that we’re folklorists,” Henry told Fashionista. “We’re using clothing, and we’re using textiles as a medium to tell the stories that we want to tell about the Black experience and our experience.”

The brand takes you to a different place, making you feel entranced by their ocean blue halter dresses and red velvet gowns. Their collection gets you lost in a sea of blues, reds, and yellows. For a moment in time, you are transported to the House of Aama’s jazz club. The designs will have you ready for a night on the town.

It is amazing to see the House of Aama continue to elevate its brand while staying true to its roots and history. The stories they tell through their designs are always celebratory and full of sincere nostalgia. Their strong sense of spirituality and their love for their past help bring their fashions to life.
