In an all-white venue, the Kevan Hall collection painted the runway with ease and exuberance this NYFW. This collection, “Hotelito”, was inspired by the everyday vibrancy of Todos Santos, Mexico. After observing communities of artisans, Mexican architecture, and colorful scenery, the collection was born. As viewers admired the collection, Mexican instrumentation soundtracked the models’ steps. The ease of the designs emulates the effortless life of the everyday woman. Showgoers noted cocktail dresses and silhouettes crafted for movement made of materials to support the same theme. Breathable pieces of cotton, flowing organza, and fringe flowed down the runway.
Along with the designs, the venue added to the dramatics of the runway presentation. The room had a curtain separating the two-room runway. The collection was called a “feast of colors”, with everyone invited to sit at the table. The models walked the runway of all ages, adding diversity to the youth-centric fashion industry. In representing the Mexican community in its authenticity, another fabric utilized was summer tweeds, often labeled elderly in other designs.
If guests learned anything from “Hotelito”, it should be that Kevan Hall is not afraid of anything. Whether it is with color, textures, silhouettes, or representation, his designs play with it all. And the audience loves it! The crowd had many favorites, with the yellow jumpsuit and the orange beaded cocktail dress as highlights.
