Honoring Virgil Abloh: A Legacy to be Remembered

In this day and age, it is so refreshing to see people of color get the recognition they deserve, especially in the fashion world. For some time now, names like Telfar, La’Quan Smith, Brandon Blackwood, and the creative visionary, Virgil Abloh have wowed us with beautiful pieces.

As a husband, father, son, friend, creative director, designer, DJ, and even as a civil engineer major, Virgil Abloh was great at any and every role he took on. Louis Vuitton CEO, Michael Burke referred to him as the Karl Lagerfeld of our time.

Unfortunately, this past Sunday it was announced via Virgil’s Instagram, that he passed away at age 41. It stated that he had an aggressive rare form of cancer called cardiac angiosarcoma. He had been privately battling this disease since 2019.

Since the announcement, many friends, fans, and those who worked alongside Abloh throughout his career, shared their condolences. LVMH also issued their statement on behalf of Louis Vuitton and Off White in regards to his passing. Later that night, Louis Vuitton also dropped a presentation of his Spring-Summer 2022 Collection in Miami, which will be taking place on November 30th at 5:30 p.m.

Who Was Virgil Abloh?

If you did not know who Virgil was, he was one of the greatest talents of this time and he will be remembered for all that he has done. Famous work of his includes being the artistic director of Louis Vuitton, founder of Off White, co-founder of Been Trill, and founder of Pyrex Vision. He worked alongside Kanye West, Pharrell  Williams, The A$AP Mob, and many, many others.

Abloh showed us that your dreams are limitless. That if you actually put your all into it and stay true to yourself, the possibilities are endless.

What separates Abloh from so many creatives of today, was that he was never afraid to push boundaries and break barriers.

Virgil had accomplished so much throughout his life. However, that journey wasn’t always easy. Being labeled as an outsider when emerging into the fashion world, he continued to work towards being one of the best. From interning at Fendi, to being the first man of color to be artistic director at Louis Vuitton; he has paved the way for many young visionaries of this generation. He had a unique vision and he never failed in making his work come to life.

Carrying on his Legacy

Virgil Abloh has cemented himself into history as one of the greats and his work shows for it. Today, we take the time to not only remember him for all that he has done but, to celebrate his life and take note of how he has and will continue to inspire many.

In his final act, Virgil’s last collection will debut at Miami Beach this Tuesday, November 30th. The show will celebrate all the things that Virgil valued most: art, fashion, design, music, and culture.
