H.E.R’s I Used to Know Her: A Prelude has been out for just over a week and the hypnotic E.P has been on repeat since then. H.E.R taps into her signature vulnerability and rawness to produce a catchy yet honest E.P.
For those not used to H.E.R, also known as Gabi Wilson, this E.P is a quick reminder that her pen and vocals are spellbinding. The 6 track E.P opens with “Lost Souls”. The opening is a chilling Lauryn Hill inspired piece that explores many of the shortcomings of fame and society today. It focuses especially on the pseudo-woke, fake feminists, and all around hypocrisy of society. H.E.R flows effortlessly over the “Lost Ones” (Lauryn Hill) beat forcing listeners to really think about what we consume and how we react.
The rest of the E.P is not as fast-paced, but still recruits her signature openness and angelic crooning. Songs like “Against me”, “Could Have Been” featuring Bryson Tiller, and “Feel A Way” center on relationships. They are reflective and raw yet emphasize the emotions and struggles of a Black 21st-century young woman in love.

The short E.P closes with “As I Am” an ending that certainly keeps the listener wanting more. H.E.R croons to her lover on this track to take her as she is. The song is a gentle reminder that you are a complete being and deserved to be loved as you are.
The shortness and sincerity in this work leave us to beg the question when is the album dropping. I Used to Know Her: A Prelude is certainly worth the listening while we wait. A short, honest, and haunting piece, it’d be no surprise if you have it on repeat all week or until her album drops.
