Andre Leon Talley is one of the most influential figures in fashion. His new documentary “The Gospel According to Andre”, takes an intimate look at the flamboyant figure’s personal life. The documentary also details the icon’s career, from his beginnings at Interview magazine, to becoming editor-at-large for American Vogue.
In the documentary directed by Karen Novack, Talley talks about the racism he faced throughout his career and being mocked as “Queen Kong” by an employee of Saint Laurent’s. The documentary features stars and close friends of Talley such as Whoopi Goldberg, Will.i.am and Anna Wintour.
Talley grew up in Durham, North Carolina where he was raised by his grandmother. In the documentary he explains how going to church was the most important thing in the South, and how it was much like a fashion show. This taught him how to dress appropriately. Talley described all his relatives as having great style.
“You can be aristocratic without being born into an aristocratic family,” said Talley.
Novack presents Talley as a man with luxurious taste who abides by his own rules of fashion, but also dedicated his life to studying fashion and art. Talley is known for his elaborate personality, lending his voice to multiple runway shows.
The documentary features various clips of Talley throughout his career, as well as fashion scene videos.
The film expertly follows Talley through his journey in South New York City to his time at Vogue which is arguably his most defining moment. The film also addresses Talley’s 40 year career as an African-American male in the fashion world.
For everyone obsessed with fashion, this documentary is definitely one to watch.
