“Get Out” surpasses ‘The Blair Witch Project’ as the Highest-Grossing Debut for Original Screenplay

Get Out Jordan Peele

Get Out has officially beaten a 20- year record held by The Blair Witch Project as the highest-grossing debut for original screenplay.

The film was written and directed by Jordan Peele. Peele is the first black American writer-director to earn over $100 million on a debut film. “Get Out” sold over more than $30 million in ticket sells in its first few days in theaters. Get Out was expected to only make $24 million in its opening weekend, which the film surpassed both first and second weekends.

With only a $4.6 million budget to make the R-rated horror film it was a box office hit for Universal and Blumhouse. Get Out stands third behind “The Exorcist”(232 million) and “Hannibal”($165 million) as one of the biggest grossing R-rated filmed and is expected to surpass Hannibal.

Congratulations to Jordan Peele!
