From Peaches Monroee, to Khae, Meet the Black Women Behind Your Favorite TikToks

There’s a long history of Black creators creating trends without being properly credited for their work. Kayla Newman, better known as Peaches Monroee, came up with the catchphrase “on fleek” back in 2014 on Vine. At the time, Monroee was not properly compensated for her catchphrase with brands like Forever 21 using the saying without her permission.

This would not be the last instance of a Black creator being improperly credited or poorly compensated after creating a popular trend. Controversy arose on TikTok in 2020 when Jalaiah Harmon, the original creator of the Renegade dance, was not credited for her work while white Tiktokers like Charli D’Amelio and Addison Rae gained popularity and high-profile career opportunities for using Harmon’s original dance.

Black creators regularly face more adversities than their white counterparts from their work being stolen, to being underpaid, and not receiving the same career opportunities. This is why it’s important to shine a light and support Black creators. Here are 10 Black creators who make TikTok what it is.
