The emerging girl group from the UK has been topping American charts and trending on our social media feeds. They are joining the new generation of R&B, combining the nostalgic feel of the 90s and early 2000s with their own modern twist.
Meet the Girls!
Jorja, Stella, and Renée make up FLO, a group of friends who met in school and over the internet, sharing a love and knack for singing. Perfectly crafted for three-part harmonies, the trio conquered the algorithm, gaining popularity on TikTok for their covers and sharing their original work “Cardboard Box”. It is their first single, released on March 24th, amassing over 5M streams on Spotify alone. The song is a lesson in breaking up with a cheater – physically remove him and his property from the relationship, and be done for good. Since fans received the original well, FLO recently released an acoustic version.
Track #2, ”Immature” could be seen as overall growth from “Cardboard Box” or just a different side of FLO. The production is more complex, with the chopped vocals in the chorus and switching of cadences. They showcase the same harmonies they have received praise for, but on this song, all members shine in their verses. The inclusion of the baby crying in the background is the kind of detail that puts a cherry on top of an already solid song.
The Lead EP and Beyond
If TikTok has taught the songstresses anything, it is consistency. On the 8th of July, a few days after releasing their second single, came The Lead, a full five-song EP. As a black girl trio, of course, the Destiny’s Child comparisons would be plentiful. And this album emphasizes that the iconic powerhouse group was a definite inspiration for FLO. In four out of five songs produced by London’s Grammy-nominated artist MNEK, we hear themes of navigating relationships and trusting in your girls. Along with classic but modernized 90s R&B sound in the production, The Lead offers everything from an empowering breakup song to anthems for the girls just trying to be hot and happy this summer. Their success is just what happens when you go with the flow. The natural talent and chemistry supports rumors of the trio working with another beloved girl group on The Bratz movie soundtrack.
Currently the fourth highest-charting project by a woman in the U.S., The Lead is calling all the girls to get out and do you without worrying about the constraints of a relationship. Its time.
