Here’s a simple love story. A 15 year-old boy meets his much older drama teacher in high school and eventually falls in love. His parents can’t keep them apart, so years later the mother of three eventually divorces her husband and marries her former student. They flourish and then he runs for president when he’s 39 and she’s 64. This is the story of France’s president elect, Emmanuel Macron.

Macron and his wife have been together throughout his political evolution. He treats her as an equal partner on her journey and says that she will define her future role when he officially takes office.

The marriage has sparked a debate on sexism and ageism in France. The question of what a modern French first lady should actually be. The Macrons break an century old pattern of powerful men with younger women.
