From Wakanda to The Bahamas: Why Disney’s New Destiny Cruise Should Be Your Next Getaway

DISNEY DESTINY

There are cruise vacations, and then there’s the Disney Destiny— a ship so thoroughly imagined, so generous in detail, and so culturally intentional that it feels like a new chapter for Disney Cruise Line. Whether you’re setting sail solo, traveling with family, or gathering your girls for a well-earned escape, the Destiny makes a persuasive case for being your next great vacation.

I boarded its inaugural sailing, just days before the ship’s maiden voyage on November 20th, and immediately felt a level of ease I haven’t experienced in years. No complicated planning, scrambling for entertainment, or negotiating reservations. Instead, the Destiny wraps you in sunshine, story-driven spaces, and an atmosphere so warm that travelers will feel instantly at home.

Built around a bold “Heroes & Villains” theme, the Destiny blends blockbuster-style entertainment with thoughtful cultural touchpoints. The result is a refreshing floating world where rest, intention, and excitement exist side by side.

The Disney Destiny, a new addition to the expanding Disney Cruise Line fleet, will embark on its maiden voyage from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Nov. 20, 2025, followed by an inaugural season of four- and five-night cruises to The Bahamas and Western Caribbean. The ship draws on the legacies of Disney’s larger-than-life heroes and villains to forge one-of-a-kind vacation experiences for families. (Disney) © Disney

The Wakandan Grand Entrance, A Real Marvel

After boarding, it took less than five minutes for the ship to take my breath away. The Grand Hall opens into a dramatic, multi-story entertainment space with a stage and sofas, centered by a powerful Black Panther statue. African-influenced woven tapestries accented the walkway outside the SAGA lounge, adding texture and cultural intention to the ship’s entertainment hub. Both SAGA and the Grand Hall channel King T’Challa’s throne room from Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, translating its geometric patterns and vibrant color palettes into a striking, immersive space.

The Grand Hall of the Disney Destiny is its most striking and prominent gathering space, a living theater where heroes and villains from across the Disney universe take center stage and interact with guests in thrilling ways. Inspired by the rich lore, distinctive iconography and vibrant palette of Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” films — including a stunning statue of the Black Panther himself at the heart of the space — this kinetic environment comes to life with immersive shows and interactive programming. That intention continues across the ship:

“Wretched Runway: A Cruella Fashion Show” is an opportunity for fashion-forward cruisers to put their personal style to the test with the fearsome fashionista herself. As guests show off their most villainous, heroic and Cruella-inspired couture, the reigning rogue en vogue provides live commentary – and advice – on the spectator’s fashion choices. Every corner of the Destiny feels crafted with intention. Disney is known for detail, but this ship takes that reputation even further. Mickey and Minnie’s voices greet you on the elevators, animation-inspired patterns are woven into the carpets, and 1-of-1 artworks and original sketches line the ship’s hallways. It’s immersive storytelling at a level that quietly exceeds what longtime Disney fans expect.

This balance struck a fun but tasteful harmony between being heavily narrative-driven without ever feeling overdone.

Pride Lands: A Dining Experience That Honors the Diaspora

Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King is where the Destiny’s attention to culture shines. The dining room blends African-influenced cuisine with live performance, immersive storytelling, and soul-moving percussion. Disney has shared that costuming elements draw inspiration from various regions across the continent, with cowrie shell details symbolizing prosperity in Benin.

The opening number, “Circle of Life,” made me feel emotional. As a product of the African diaspora, seeing elements of our history and sound honored on a global stage like this was a priceless moment. It’s rare to feel recognized so directly, and celebrated so loudly, in mainstream entertainment spaces.

And yes, the berbere chicken on the menu had my whole Ethiopian heart smiling.

Hercules, Reimagined With Even More Soul

One of the brightest surprises on the Destiny is its all-new stage production of Disney Hercules. The cast completed 11 weeks of intensive rehearsals before ever stepping foot on the ship, and it shows in every beat. The Muses come out swinging — full vocals and full attitude. Their harmonies feel soulful and bright, and their chemistry lights up the stage. The decision to include two male Muses gives the group a fun, inclusive, modern twist while still honoring everything that fans love about the original ensemble. I walked out of the Walt Disney Theater feeling spiritually recharged, still humming “Zero to Hero.”

The production design deserves its own applause, especially the towering, hyper-realistic, purple Hydra. Hades, portrayed by actor Matthew Patrick Quinn, is another standout, bringing sharp comedic timing and a slick, mischievous charm that keeps every scene lively.

“Disney Hercules” is a brand-new, Broadway-style retelling of the Walt Disney Animation Studios film developed exclusively for the Disney Destiny. Embodying the ship’s theme of “heroes and villains,” the show features jaw-dropping puppetry to represent the mythological behemoths that Hercules must defeat to fulfill his hero’s journey, such as the multi-headed Hydra monster. Hercules is led by Corey J. Bradford, whose grounded performance gives the story depth, especially as the first black actor to portray Hercules on an official Disney production. During our conversation onboard, he shared that Hercules’ journey resonates with him as a Black man striving toward purpose while carrying the weight of expectation and pushing through doubt or hesitation. That personal connection shines through in his performance, lifting the show from great entertainment to something genuinely resonant.

The Bahamas: Soft Life, Sunlight, and a Much-Needed Reset

Our stop in The Bahamas was all about the soft life: sunbathing, turquoise water, and incredible memories made with my family. However, the highlight, by far, was snorkeling. The experience takes guests into deeper water, where Disney has hidden submerged character statues. Swimming past schools of zebra fish and spotting an underwater Mickey felt like discovering a secret Disney world, tucked beneath the waves.

Why the Destiny Works for Every Kind of Traveler

Disney designed this ship with intention, and it shows. I traveled with my sister and two nieces, and the Destiny kept everyone entertained with ease. However, what impressed me most is how many different types of travelers would thrive here:

The ship’s layout is intuitive, the staff is warm and global, and everything feels seamless, from meals to entertainment to housekeeping. Even with colder, windier weather than expected, Disney’s signature attention to comfort (including heavy knit throw blankets) kept the vibe cozy.

Dining That Deserves Its Own Spotlight

Marceline Market is the ship’s buffet-style dining hall with endless breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, including unlimited crab claws. (Yes, they were incredible!) For quick bites, Donald’s Cantina and Mickey’s Smokestack became staples. But the rotational dining experience is where the Destiny shines. Servers follow you each night, learning your preferences and creating a sense of familiarity that feels indulgent. Our favorite drinks were waiting at the table by night 2!

Worlds of Marvel, Disney Cruise Line’s Marvel-themed dining experience, hosts guests for an out-of-this-world celebration starring the lively duo of Rocket and Groot from the blockbuster Marvel Studios “Guardians of the Galaxy” films on the Disney Destiny. (Disney) © Disney

Worlds of Marvel turns dinner into interactive storytelling with screens, lights, Rocket and Groot cameos, and a surprise restaurant-wide sing-along to “Livin’ on a Prayer.” It’s Disney at its most playful.

And the cocktails? From edible glitter to floating beverages, and champagne in a perfume spritzer, the creativity is undeniable.

A Vacation That Feels Like Transformation

At its core, the Disney Destiny is more than a cruise to the Bahamas. It’s a reminder that rest is powerful, representation is meaningful, and joy should be accessible.

Editorial note: As someone who didn’t grow up visiting Disney or traveling by cruise, the Destiny offered a kind of inner-child healing I didn’t expect. Being on the water, feeling seen during “Circle of Life,” snorkeling with my nieces– it felt like reclaiming a younger version of myself who deserved this ease.

The Disney Destiny gives you space to breathe, to play, and to feel seen. If you’re imagining a trip that balances ease with wonder, and a little magic woven into every day, take this as your sign. The Disney Destiny may be exactly the escape you’ve been craving.
