Deportation is Coming: How Immigrants are Preparing

deportation immigrants

Rumors are spreading, and as they do, fear grows in American communities. Families are living in fear of separation or arrest underneath the Trump administration. Documented and undocumented immigrants are trying to figure out how to prepare for possible deportation, and how to protect themselves from ICE raids.

Catholic Charities are currently offering programs called “immigration intake sessions.”

They have lawyers to help answer anything about current legislation, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. These meetings advise on how to apply for green cards, give asylum help, and educate on the rights of the undocumented. The reassurance is  important to many, who flock to these events for information and comfort.

Paperwork is available, but the questions they hold would be difficult for anyone to answer. From identification, finances, and child custody, the immigrants who need help are living in fear.

“It’s important not to be so scared that you’re afraid to leave your house, send your kids to school, or go to the hospital if you need to.” Raluca Oncioiu told CNN. He is the director of immigration legal services at Catholic Charities. Immigration right now has been confusing, and people like Oncioiu can offer clarity. But until something changes, these fears will still be hard to ease.
