The Soul Train Music Awards is an annual music awards show that previously aired in national broadcast syndication and honors the best in African-American culture, music, and entertainment. The first show aired 35 years ago, on March 23, 1987, on the WGN America network until 2007. BET and BET Her Network then took over from 2009 until the present. The Soul Train Awards is produced by the makers of the program “Soul Train,” from which it takes its name. This award show features musical performances by various contemporary R&B and Soul music recording artists. Over the years, the Soul Train Music Awards has featured a number of RNB music luminaries, such as Luther Vandross, Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, Will Smith, Taraji P. Henson, and Vanessa Williams.
A separate award show named “Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards” was held from 1995 to 2005, honoring female artists. As of 2022, Beyoncé is the most awarded artist at the Soul Train Awards, with 22 awards, followed by Chris Brown with 14 awards, and Bruno Mars and Janet Jackson both tied for 13 awards. The 2022 Soul Train Awards took place on November 26th at the Orleans Arena in Vegas.
Some of the winners this year included Muni Long, who won the Ashford and Simpson Songwriters Award. Tems was awarded the Best New Artist Award. Beyoncé’s Renaissance won Album of the Year, with “Break My Soul” as Song of the Year, and the Best/RNB Soul Male Award went to Chris Brown. Xscape won the Special Award at the Lady of Soul Awards. The Legend Award was won by Morris Day and the Time.
