Cheers to us! Black-created and led shows unapologetically tell Black stories. They also serve as clear points of Black representation in the media. Now that streaming platforms are increasingly popular, more of our shows are available. Platforms like Netflix have included Black shows in their lineup since their inception. In fact, the number of Black TV shows on Netflix is continuously growing.
In 2020, Netflix launched its Black Lives Matter collection. The collection includes movies, TV series, and specials. Netflix was not alone in this venture; Hulu and Disney+ followed suit.
Despite promising to honor Black excellence, streaming platforms are removing multiple Black TV shows from their platforms. In September 2023, Essence reported that streaming platforms have canceled several shows, including “Grown-ish,” “Ziwe,” “Legendary,” “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” and “The Wonder Years.”
In January 2024, HBO Max announced that Issa Rae’s “Rap Sh!t” would not return for a third season. Of course, some fans immediately took to X to air out their grievances. Some viewers pointed out everything from marketing issues to low viewership on social media as possible reasons for the cancellation.
Although many beloved shows are no longer streaming, Netflix promises to deliver several projects throughout the year. The streamer plans to add fan-favorite shows, including “My Wife and Kids.” With that in mind, here are some Black TV shows and specials Netflix is adding in February 2024!
1. Waves
Starring Sterling K. Brown, “Waves” explores a Black family and their struggles with drugs, death, and imprisonment. The movie, produced by A24, is now available to stream.
2. The Vince Staples Show
Rapper Vince Staples is starring as himself in a self-titled new comedy. Since 2015, Staples has earned small acting roles, but after his role as Maurice in “Abbott Elementary,” he became a fan favorite. “The Vince Staples Show” follows Vince through his everyday life as a rapper. The Netflix original is now available to stream.
3. Mea Culpa
Kelly Rowland returns to the screen in the Netflix Original “Mea Culpa.” The film also stars Trevante Rhodes and RonReaco Lee. “Mea Culpa,” produced by Rowland, follows a lawyer who begins representing a tortured artist accused of killing his girlfriend. The film was also directed and written by Tyler Perry. “Mea Culpa” begins streaming on Feb. 23, 2024.
4. Mike Epps: Ready to Sell Out
Mike Epps has brought another stand-up comedy special to Netflix. Following 2015’s “Mike Epps: Don’t Take It Personal”, the “Mike Epps: Ready to Sell Out” special shows the actor and comedian getting deep about his personal and financial issues. “Mike Epps: Ready to Sell Out” is now available to stream.
During Black History Month and all year long, we must celebrate Black art. No matter the format, Black representation is crucial now more than ever. Stream these Black TV shows on Netflix for an entertaining night at home!
