Beware of Bleaching Your Hair !

purple hair justine
I hate this Picture, but here’s my purple hair!

*sighs* So just a couple of weeks ago I had written a piece about guys loving girls with natural, curly hair. Now I come to you MEF-heads once again to vent about my struggle with natural, curly hair that I’ve had for a while. As you can tell in some of my pictures, my hair happens to be blue-green. It’s pretty obvious that this is not my real hair color and had to undergo some sort of chemical procedure to get this color. Let me just take a minute to walk through my hair journey. Follow me…

I’m always interested in changing my hair into different styles whether it’s through coloring or just the style itself. Growing up I always had a variety of hair styles. Some I liked, some…I would rather not like to think of how I was able to leave the house looking like such. But I got tired of styling and wanted to color my hair. I knew that I was going to have to take baby steps when it came to coloring because of the chemicals used. When I suggested this idea to my mother, she instantly disagreed with the idea of me bleaching my hair any color. But being the driven person that I am, I begged her on a daily basis until she agreed. Eventually she grew tired of me asking and gave in. The first color I chose to get were honey brown highlights. The procedure took forever but it came out great. After leaving the hair stylist, I remember my mother telling me that I should beware of the bleach and how often I should treat my hair. Boy, I wish I would have taken her advice…

Dominican Blow Out! Had to show you guys!

Two years later, I grew extremely bored with my hair and decided to dye my hair purple. My mother was totally against this once again, but being the stubborn child that I am I took a trip to a salon by the name of Dramatics NYC and spoke with one of the hair stylists about booking an appointment to become a purple head. Two weeks later, I was sitting in an overpriced salon in the West Village watching all of my hair go from fading honey brown highlights, to honey blonde, to Barney purple. I was in love…until the next day when I decided to condition my hair. My hair began to fall out in clumps. I wasn’t that worried because the hair stylist told me that my hair would fall out each time I washed my hair because of the bleach. But this kept going on for about a month. I grew scared because large amounts of my hair would be flowing into the drainer. I can also recall when I washed my hair in warm water and my hair turned rock hard, but I digress.

A couple of months later I grew bored again and decided to become a mermaid and dye my hair blue-green. This time a good friend of mine, who aspires to be a cosmopolitan, did my hair for almost 80% less than what I was charged at Dramatics *cough* $200 *cough*. This time a lightener was used in my hair since I already bleached my hair from the purple. When she finished I was instantly in love. I couldn’t stop taking pictures. But once again I was going through the same thing that I had gone through with the purple. My hair was falling out, not as much as with the purple, but still a good amount of beautiful hair going down the drain. And soon my curl pattern was damaged. What I didn’t realize was that because of all of the chemicals and heat I was applying in my hair I was seriously damaging my hair. And now my hair no longer has the voluminous curls/waves I used to have prior to bleaching my hair. My hair is also dry and breaking. A girl is definitely in need of some serious treatment.

So to those who want to dye their own hair take the necessary steps to maintain your beautiful hair. It might be time-consuming or costly but in the end it will definitely be worth it.

The mermaid in the flesh! My curl pattern is gone so I did a braid out.
