The age-old debate about Crocs; will it ever be acceptable to wear them? Amongst the fashion community, that is. Reinvention has been something designers clearly want to strive towards and Balenciaga has been the latest to cast Crocs on their catwalk.
You can say Crocs are a relatively new phenomenon when it comes to footwear. You can definitely say they have split reviews in the fashion world. Pros? Comfortable, durable, washable, slip-on etc. Cons? “Damn ugly” was what one fashionista told me when I put these new inventions by Balenciaga to an Instagram poll.
In the traditional world of fashion design, they aren’t the most aesthetically pleasing pair of footwear out there. Fashion’s client-base hasn’t been quick to jump on the Crocs train and they’ve certainly had a certain type of customer since their launch. However, when the designer Christopher Kane sent his interpretation of the love/hate sandals down the runway in 2016, that all changed. Social Media was alight with those who swooned and those who wanted to incinerate Crocs in their entirety. Did Christopher Kane make Crocs cool again? We’re not so sure but Balenciaga seems to think so.
For their SS18 show in Paris, Balenciaga sent the ‘Foam’ (a 10-cm platform version of the Crocs, seen above) stomping down its catwalk. One can be forgiven for saying the brand is evidently trying to broaden its horizons. Balenciaga recently underwent a very slight logo change and members of the creative team have been saying they wanted to make the label more marketable for millennials. But, Crocs? Would you wear the embellished dazzlers?
Whatever the fashion rules say, buying a pair isn’t the utmost of fashion crimes. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder..and all that. ?
