Assembly’s Take on Black BEAUTY: NYFW MEN’S SS17

As the #BlackLivesMatter movement powerfully arises, especially from recent tragedies taking place across the country, it was only a matter of time before the supporters hit the runways. On the third day of men’s Fashion Week, Assembly’s show mesmerized the crowds in many levels.

Founder and designer Greg Armas presented an effortless collection of 10 looks which were almost exclusively put together in black and white. He created a graceful balance between comfort and style for the contemporary man. Sweatpants, shorts and sandals were crucial to display the emblematic relaxed aura of the brand. Armas kept the details to the minimum and opted to prioritize models. In a more interactive approach, a gorgeous cast of only black men were standing in a single line across the catwalk bound to be applauded. They all rocked their dreadlocks in various ways making it impossible to overlook.

This is a huge step not only for the rather narrow industry of fashion, but for an entire nation that has raised its voice and is steadily bearing fruit. Assembly’s show was more than an act of solidarity. It was a sensible reminder of understanding beauty and individuality in all its countless forms. The foundations of fashion design lie in this very same principle: embracing the differences between materials and styles to create exquisiteness. Maya Angelou said: “All great artists draw from the same resource: the human heart, which tell us that we are all more alike than we are unalike”. Greg Armas proved to be an admirable artist with a virtuous nature.
