Amir Kelly, 21 years old, releases his début single exclusively on MEFeater Magazine!
What pushes one to follow their passions? For Amir Kelly the answer was simple.
After being diagnosed with Stage 3 Burkitt’s Lymphoma Cancer, Amir Kelly wanted to live life to the fullest. He auditioned for USC’s (University of Southern California) prestigious Music Program, where he now studies under music legend, Patrice Rushen. However, even before the life altering news Amir music was always the only option for this LA based artist.
“I’ve been performing since I was 3 years old, competing in vocal competitions and talent shows as much as possible. I received 7 karaoke machines as presents growing up. Music has always been the only option for me.”
Despite limited resources, Amir and his fellow college creatives have achieved a high quality of work. He embodies his Black and Indian heritage through his fierce and tenacious nature.

Although written while cleaning toilets at Starbucks, Amir Kelly’s debut single “MAUI” references a life of luxury. The video depicts Black royalty and the majestic nature of people of color. The viewer is introduced to Amir’s world where everyone has the power to reclaim their own crown.
“I started writing “MAUI” while I was a barista at Starbucks. I used to always volunteer to clean the toilets because the acoustics in the bathrooms were amazing. Additionally, I knew I couldn’t fly anyone anywhere, but I needed to someday.”
However, this isn’t a video about Amir longing for wealth. In actuality, he is mostly unimpressed with luxury. According to the director, Francisco Covarrubias, the video was shot with almost no budget. Amir’s hair was braided by someone who believed in his vision and the majority of the video was filmed a few miles from where Amir grew up. With animated wordplay and references to pop culture, Amir uses Maui as a metaphor for the spontaneity of pleasure. Incorporating classical Indian melodies and 90’s R&B background vocals, he allures his lover into a state of euphoria, which is the beauty you create around you.
“This isn’t a video about me longing for wealth. I’m mostly unimpressed with luxury. “MAUI” comes from a desire to provide for somebody you love in a way that nobody else could. It’s a fantasy of what life will look like, when you do what you love, for the one you love.”
Kelly is preparing to release two more singles and an upcoming EP.
